A woman enjoying a walk in a plantation garden

Charleston in May

I love Charleston, South Carolina in May! The weather is a little more stable, not too hot, not too cold, it's just right. The days are warm and sunny, the nights cool enough to sit outside by a fire. Flowers are in full bloom. I love to visit the plantations and walk in the gardens, it's my favorite things to do. Festivals are happening almost every weekend, along with Farmer Markets and outdoor concerts. We have the Spoleto Festival in May which takes place over several weeks. It is known for its artistic performances. Theatre, dance, music, free events and even workshops. Visitors come from all over the world to experience this.

This is the time to remind myself to check in on my self care routine. Exercise? Hydrate? Sunblock? Eating more veggies than sweets? (I love my sweets, but I know moderation is key or I will be in trouble). As we get older our bodies start showing us where we need to improve. Do you find it it harder to open lids on jars? Do you find yourself breathng a little heavier after going upstairs? I also work on my mindset because there are days I get frustrated because I can't get to the things I want, or my body just says no way! Mark and I have planned out that at least twice a week we will go out and do something fun. We tend to let the days run away from us instead of us running the day. We are working hard on that! There is so much to do here in Charleston, boring should never be in our vocabulary. We have a few beaches, each one has its own island flair. Folley Beach (where Mark and I were married) has a low key, bohemian atmosphere. A brand new pier has taken the place of the old one and it's a beauty! Isle of Palms is another beach we frequently go to. It has a long, sandy beach and even a lifeguard station at the park. Other beaches that are nearby are Sullivan's Island and Kiawah Island where you can see wild dolphins stranding (feeding) at the shoreline.

We moved down here 13 years ago and I have no regrets. Yes, the traffic can be awful, events can be sold out if you're not quick enough to buy tickets and standing in line is almost a given. But the sunshine, warm weather, and the beauty of Charleston has not disappointed me at all and more than makes up for the inconveniences.

Come on down and visit. You can walk the cobblestone streets, visit historic houses, eat at some of the best restaurants and visit Fort Sumter, where the first shots of the Civil War took place. The history, both the good and evil is abundant. If you do come down the best months for enjoying the area with low humidity and lower temperatures will be April, May, and beginning of June. After that, the temps will hit mid to high 90's and the humidity will make it feel like it's even higher. Our Christmas season is beautiful as well. No, we can't promise you a white Christmas, but the city really does goes all out with the decorations and festivities.

What are your favorite cities to visit? During which season? What do you like to do there, especially if you are a repeat visitor.
